Ford Principal Secretary 8/12/14 Dear Families, Welcome to the George H. Conley School for the 2014-2015 academic year. I hope you all had a wonderful, safe, and relaxing summer. We are really excited to start off this new school year. Our staff is prepared to offer your child a world-class education and together we will make sure that all of our students have a safe and successful school year! We have some exciting initiatives and programs planned for you and your child this year. I am very happy to announce that the Eliot School of Fine Arts will be back at the Conley! Through this partnership, all students in grades K2 5 will receive nine weeks of Visual Arts and/or Woodworking classes. We will once again be offering an 8 week Hip Hop program to all students, Choir for students in grades 3 5, Drama Club for students in grades 2 5 and for the first time we will have a Girls on the Run running club for our 4th and 5th grade girls! Making Music Matters is also returning to the Conley! This year all students in grades 4th and 5th will have an opportunity to take musical instrument lessons during the school day! I am currently looking for a Making Music Matters Parent Liaison. If you are interested in this one hour a week, paid position, please contact me at 617-821-1881. This year we will also continue to offer all of our students with Art, Physical Education (PE), Math Enrichment, and Science specialist classes. In an on-going effort to ensure that all of our students reach their academic potential, we will continue to offer a school wide, twenty-five minute, Acceleration Block where students will receive individualized support. Every Friday during our Acceleration Block all staff and students will participate in D.E.A.R. Conley! During this time, EVERYONE at the Conley will Drop Everything And Read! This year we will also continue to provide tiered academic and socio-emotional support to all of our students. We will continue to have Service Team Facilitators to support our classroom teachers and to provide extra support to our students. With these supports in place, a team of dynamic and highly qualified teachers, and with your continued support I have no doubt that all of our students will have a successful school year! I am also excited to announce that I have a Principal Intern this year. Please join me in welcoming, Amy Helms. Amy comes to the Conley from Washington, DC. Amy has worked as a fourth and fifth grade teacher and language arts specialist. Amy will be at the Conley two days a week and taking courses in school leadership at Harvard University. She is looking forward togetting to know the Conley community! Creating strong partnerships with all of our families is extremely important to us! We will continue to host different events throughout the year where families will have an opportunity to meet our staff and other families and to hear about all the wonderful things that are happening at the Conley! The first of these events is our Popsicles with the Principal meet and greet. This event is on Thursday, 8/28 from 5 6 pm in the Conley playground. We are also having our 4th Annual Back to School BBQ on Tuesday, September 2nd, from 5:00 6:30 pm at the Conley! This is a great opportunity to meet your childs teacher(s), your child can meet his/her classmates, see your childs classroom, and visit with other families. You will also be able to purchase school uniform shirts with our Conley logo. If you and your family plan on attending this event please RSVP by emailing us at HYPERLINK "mailto:conley@boston.k12.ma.us" conley@boston.k12.ma.us or by calling/texting me at 617-821-1881. In case you cannot come to either of these events, we are hosting an Open House on the first day of school, Thursday, 9/4 from 8:30 9:00 am. Families will have an opportunity to meet their childs teacher and see his/her classroom. As a reminder, the first day of school is Thursday, 9/4 for students in grades 1st 5th and Monday, 9/8 for students in grades KO, K1, and K2. We hope you will become an active partner in your childs learning and our school community. The School Parent Council (SPC) will offer many opportunities for you to help our school and meet new friends. Our SPC co-chairs Heather Cochran and Martha Butler and I invite you to our first meeting tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 11, at 6:30 pm. If you have any questions regarding SPC please call CONTACT _Con-3618F91B27 Heather Cochran at 617-325-0496. The Conley staff is committed to providing highly effective instruction to help our students learn the skills necessary to become better readers, writers, thinkers, mathematicians, and citizens. Shortly your childs teacher will send you more specific details about class expectations and grade level curriculum. I hope over the year you will contact your childs teacher as soon as you have any questions or concerns, or myself, if you have any questions about school policy. I have enclosed additional information for you about our policies and procedures. Please review these procedures and expectations with your child. We are honored and excited that you have selected the George H. Conley this year. The faculty and I have a rigorous, fun, and exciting year planned. With your help this school year will be a successful and rewarding one for your child. I look forward to working and learning with you this year. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
